Macchia is a ceramic side table, an occasional stool reinterpreting the ancient Anatolian Iznik ceramics .
Conceived as a design strategy that can merge the richness of ancient traditions with modern design sensibilities, the side table challenges traditional notions on crafts proposing a new aesthetics that leverages the unique character of this material.
Part of From Ancient Anatolian Crafts to Contemporary Designs - an intiative led by the Turkey Design Council and funded by the European Union, in partnership with the Brumen Foundation in Slovenia and the Traditional Arts Association in Turkey. Over the course of 15 months, the project focused on revitalizing five traditional Anatolian crafts: Iznik style ceramics, felt making, quilting, stone carving, and inlaying. The goal was to merge local know-how with contemporary design, ensuring the survival of endangered Anatolian crafts through means of intercultural collaboration.
