This projects re-evaluates waste and investigates the possibility of repurposing paper by focusing on the concept of up-cycling and on circular design. Avoiding synthetic binders and ceramic glaze, these tiles are made of a mono-material that can be repurposed once dismissed.
In Europe, 1kg of paper per person gets wasted every day; even though a 70% is recycled or used for energy recovery, a big part still ends up in the landfill. Paper can, in fact, be recycled up to six times before its fibres get too short to be further processed.
The material research combines thus exhausted paper with porcelain and results in a ceramic material that reduces the amount of porcelain needed and reuses paper that would likely end up in the landfill or incinerited.
Finally, the open and uneven structure of this porcelain is used to make sound dampening tiles.
